New Year, New Habits

New Year, New Beginnings

As the new year kicks off, many of us are setting new health goals. Here are the ones I'm focusing on to better my physical and mental health. After all, everything starts with a healthy body, right?

1. Slow down eating

Eating with intention means tuning into your senses and noticing how your body reacts. Focus only on eating, don't multitask. It helps you stay in touch with your hunger cues and avoid overeating.

2. Skip Snacks:

I know this is hard, but try reducing snacks and/or replacing processed, unhealthy (especially sweet) snacks with healthier savory and low carb alternatives. There are lots of delicious new options out there so try new things at your grocery store, or shop at a new store.

3. Add more Plants

Try "eating a rainbow" of different veggies and fruits every week - Colorful vegetables make your gut more diverse which helps boost immune function, improve digestion, and protect against chronic diseases.

4. Move

Yes, we are all sitting for hours and hours a day. Set an alarm every hour to get up, stretch, move. Better still, add at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise to your daily routine. This can be as simple as a daily walk, or jumping on the treadmill while you watch the next episode of your fave show.

5. Sleep

Can't stress this enough. Every living being sleeps. Our body repairs when we sleep. Everything is better when we've had a good night's rest. Put away the phone before bedtime (plug it far away from your bed so you don't cheat), and rest.

6. Spend time in Nature

There's something deeply restorative about being outdoors. Breathe some fresh air, get your vitamin D, gaze at beautiful scenery and count your blessings.
